Agenda

Music was our first love, and you’re goddam right it will be our last. That’s why we not only play a broad range of cool stuff, but we have dj’s from Thursday to Saturday and semi-acoustic live gigs on Sundays, with acts from around the globe.

On Kingsday the 27th of April we go all out with a big stage outside. And then there’s stand up comedy in the shape of Ken Parson’s Ironic Curtain Comedy Club, in English.

CPC's longest running program, ICCC, returns every 2nd Sunday of the month, in English, with amateurs and pro's from all over the world. From 16.30 till about 18.30.

Hosted by Ken Parsons, the Jester of the West.

Checkpoint Charlie is the gateway to West and Westerpark, at a collision point where De Jordaan, the Centre and the Westerpark area meet. We have Weihenstephaner ale on draft, awesome snacks like Berlin currywurst, served with an eclectic mix of rock, funk, soul, reggae, ska, bluegrass and old school hiphop. We’re a real place, with an excellent staff and friendly owners behind the bar. We got DJ’s, small live gigs, comedy, spoken word, improv jams, pop and pub quizzes, and loads of rock ’n roll. See our ‘sounds’ section for more.

This story started in 2014, when we, Jaro, Jeroen and Carina found a place in this fair city that made our hearts beat faster; it was big, ugly and available. Perfect. We got the money together by asking everyone around us. People lend us big chunks of the budget we were aiming for, but we gave everyone an opportunity to contribute by opening an account and paying in advance. An amazing thing happened. All the people we knew joined in, it went viral on Facebook alone and within a week or so we collected 10.000 euro. It finalized at 22.049… If that wasn’t enough to put tears in our eyes and goosebumps on our skins, every day we were rebuilding the place, people stopped by to lend us a hand. Painting, breaking, building, cleaning, you name it, our friends did it. We are so incredibly grateful for this, words can’t express. Now it’s up to us to make this what we want it to be: a place worthy of Amsterdam.

The amount of people involved to bring this monster to life From plumbers to painters, from grafitti artists to designers, from sound engineers to electricians; awesome people from all walks of life.

Beer

We have eight taps, two of which are reserved for our regular ale, the absolutely wonderful Weihenstephan pilsener, and one for the Hefe Weisse from the same Bavarian brewery, with a history of almost a thousand years the oldest official brewery in the world. We’re proud to be one of the few café’s in Holland serving this pilsener from draft. The other taps contain mostly local beers, ranging from IPA’s to triples.

In our search for the right stuff we always go for quality. If that means avoiding the big factories, even better. Our tequila for example is 100% agave, we have a very honest Venezuelan rum and a Scottish peat whisky from Islay that will make you want to call your loved ones.

Wine

So much to say, so little time. But we’ll try: we have two whites and two reds. Our organic housewines are a wonderful white blend from Spain, containing sauvignon blanc, verdejo and airen grapes, and a robust red tempranillo from the same country. Above the rim we have a more bodied and complex white pinot grigio and a very tempting sangiovese di Toscana, ripe with fruits, both, of course, from Italy. We also serve prosecco, and, perhaps surprisingly, a more than decent sweet white from France as well as an elegant Spanish rosé.

Coffee & Tea

Since coffee is probably the most important commodity on the planet, after clean water and love, we treat this subject seriously. The beans are grown in Brazil by Bruno Souza, whom we met when he was in Amsterdam. They’re roasted in Noord, just across the water, by Kees Kraakman and his boys, a.k.a. Keppler.

Soft drinks & juice

We’re living in exciting times when it comes to soda’s and juices; lots of small but passionate companies around Europe are creating pure and tasty alternatives for the usual suspects. Our cola is from Hamburg’s own Fritz-Kola, and it actually tastes better than you-know-what. Special shout out goes to Agroposta, a juice with all natural fruits and herbs, handpicked in a.o. Croatia. Yes, you read that right, and we’re not even kidding.

We like short lines of transport from our suppliers to the bar. That means we serve locally produced goodies, like our 180-grams curry wurst by Brandt en Levie and righteous triple layer tosti’s from Amsterdam. And last but certainly not least, bitterballen and more from Oma Bob. Because let’s face it: There Can Only Be One.

Birthday?

You’re most welcome to celebrate your birthday, your graduation, your new bicycle or your flawless GTA victory and any other reason you might have for a party, here at CPC. Not on Fridays though, they are generally too busy.

This is how it works:
Call or email us with the date, the hour of arrival, the estimated number of people, and of course your name. Your first beverage is on us. Please note; we don't reserve tables, but you'll find a spot, don't worry.

If you want to buy your friends a couple of drinks you can either tell the staff how much you want to spend, if it’s for any drink or beer/wine/soda’s only, or, if it’s just about a welcome drink, you can get any number of coins at the bar.
You can also bring a cake and some food if you want, but please clean up after yourself. Any other questions, just ask.

It’s not possible to rent the place exclusively, we feel very strongly about being open for everyone.
